The Best Possible Start

Love of Learning Begins Here

Pre-K 3 serves as a magical gateway for 3-year-olds, blending structured learning with playful exploration to build foundational skills. At this tender age, children are like sponges, absorbing social, emotional, and physical lessons through everyday activities.

"Pre-K 3 at JCDS offers a warm, nurturing start where curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning naturally begin to take shape," said Director of Admissions Lauren Ellis. "Through hands-on exploration and thoughtful early-childhood instruction, our youngest learners build essential social, emotional, and academic skills."

Connecting in the Morning

Our Pre-K students get a strong start to the morning. Each day kicks off with circle time, also known as Morning Meeting—a dedicated moment that fosters camaraderie among classmates. This quiet and simple routine gives each child a moment to self-regulate from the morning stresses of getting up, getting ready, dealing with siblings, and rushing to get to school on time.

"Morning Meeting is a time for connection," said Early Learning Team Lead Wendy Johnston. "It builds confidence, empathy, and respect for one another."

This peaceful gathering fosters a sense of community, helping children develop confidence as they share thoughts and listen to others. It's not just about sitting in a circle; it's an opportunity for the little ones to value each other's perspectives. In these sessions, 3-year-olds learn that school is a safe space for belonging, setting a positive tone for the adventures ahead.

Moving and Thinking

Physical education in Pre-K is far from rote exercises—it's an engaging blend of movement and cognition. Consider a fun activity where children pick up a colored toy or block from a stash and deliver it to a matching colored hoop. This isn't just play; it's an early introduction to identifying attributes like color and shape, while honing sorting skills. As kids work in teams, they practice cooperation, learning to communicate and collaborate with peers.

Beyond the mental workout, this game sharpens gross motor skills, encouraging running, balancing, and coordination. Following directions adds another layer, helping children focus and respond to instructions in a dynamic environment. For 3-year-olds, whose energy knows no bounds, such activities channel their enthusiasm into purposeful play, strengthening both body and brain.

Let's Get Artsy!

Pre-K 3 students, like older students, benefit from the variety of specialist classes at JCDS. These rotations introduce new skills and spark curiosity in creative ways.

Art class with Ms. Alli Flores offers a canvas for self-expression, as seen in a session where the teacher demonstrated drawing a snowflake and using watercolor paints. The focus was on hands-on demonstration: "Let me show you, now you try!" This approach builds fine motor skills through gripping brushes, mixing colors, and precise strokes, while also strengthening hands and encouraging movements that cross the body's midline— key for future writing and coordination.

Music lessons with Ms. Jessica Barker give students exposure to rhythm, pitch, and just the simple fun of singing age-appropriate songs!

Focused Academics

Literacy is a major component of early education. While the children are learning to recognize capital letters, they are also exposed to a great variety of words through storytelling. Ms. Jen Currie, our Library and Literacy Specialist, is a world-class reader of books who can keep her audience mesmerized.

Our littlest Sharks also attend Spanish class, where Señora Iliana Leonard uses puppets, songs, and dances to expose the students to the Spanish language and culture. This week, they are working on a dance to Feliz Navidad in time for the holidays.

Beginning in January, the Pre-K 3 students will also see Ms. Deborah Landon in the Science Lab and Ms. Cristina Knodel in the Technology Lab to round out their rotation of specialist offerings.

We Have Recess!

No Pre-K day is complete without recess, where the playground becomes a realm of adventure. On the green circle playground, daredevils might zoom around a racetrack, testing limits in ways that feel thrilling yet safe—thanks to ample supervision from teachers, as well as vigilant eyes of helpers who drop in to add support. The LearningScape, constructed specifically for the Pre-K students, offers ramps, trees to climb, sandboxes, and running water to make "delicious cuisine" from mud and bark. There is no end to what their imaginations may conjure!

"Unstructured play shapes the brain and opens the imagination," said Ms. Johnston. "It develops independence, reasoning, and passion in children."

Children decide their own games, developing independence as they navigate choices and solve problems on the fly. It hones reasoning skills through trial and error, like figuring out how to share a tricycle or build a sandcastle. Passion emerges naturally, driven by intrinsic motivation. They play because it's enjoyable, not for rewards.

Experts can't emphasize enough the value of this free-form exploration: it builds resilience, creativity, and social intelligence, all while letting kids be kids in a supportive environment.

Grow with Us

In Pre-K 3, every activity—from structured meetings to wild playground escapades—weaves together to support holistic growth. These experiences cultivate confident, empathetic, and capable children, ready to tackle kindergarten and beyond.

"Rooted in our school’s values and strong sense of community, the Pre-K 3 experience ensures children feel known, supported, and truly at home as they begin their journey here at JCDS," said Ms. Ellis.

By prioritizing connection, movement, creativity, and play, Pre-K doesn't just teach; it inspires a lifelong love of learning. For parents and educators, observing these moments reminds us: in the world of little ones, the simplest routines hold the greatest potential.
