Making Social Connections

by Michael Porter
Pre-K 3 students cement friendships on the LearningScape.
Our Pre-K 3 students are enjoying the mild, seasonable weather when they spend time on the redesigned LearningScape, which is getting rave reviews!

The unstructured time gives our youngest Sharks the opportunity to learn by playing, which is their way of building social-emotional and creative skills they will use throughout their lives.

When left to their own devices with simple items like blocks, pots and pans, and shovels with buckets, students use their imaginations to imitate what they see in the adult world and to make it their own.

"Hello? Who is calling?" may be a fun game derived from a simple block of wood, while a whole scenario is playing out in the child's mind.

Choosing their playmates, negotiating roles, and working through small disagreements without an adult stepping in help children learn how to share, take turns, and read each other’s cues. Through these everyday moments, genuine friendships develop as they build the confidence to connect with peers.

While the children may feel this is all unsupervised free time, it is all under the watchful eyes of their teachers, who are always ready when needed.
