The Magic of Colors

by Michael Porter
Kindergarten students mix their colors in the Science Lab.
In August, Kindergarten students began their unit on the five senses in the science lab. First, they focused on the sense of sight, mixing primary-colored water to create new colors.

Science Specialist Deborah Landon called the lesson “magic with colors” and noted how it connects to what students learn in art with Ms. Alli Flores.

“Ms. Flores may teach that the primary colors mix, but we use science to prove it,” said Ms. Landon.

The students were wide-eyed with fascination as blue and red made purple, red and yellow made orange, and a mix of many colors made a muddy brown that looked a lot like science’s way of saying, “That’s enough mixing for one day.”

Science Lab is only one of the specialist classes our Sharks look forward to. All students also have daily PE and recess, plus regular time in Technology, Art, Music, Spanish, and the Library. We’re proud that our Sharks receive a broad education that weaves together STEM and the Fine Arts.
