First-graders were buzzing with excitement during their author study of beloved children's writer Julia Donaldson. Her stories burst with whimsical plots that spark young imaginations and hold their attention from start to finish. The catchy rhythms and playful rhymes make reading a joy, while those repeating lines invite kids to chime in and become part of the tale.
The vibrant, inventive illustrations, mostly by talented artist Axel Scheffler, add a magical touch, enchanting the students with every colorful page.
Among the favorites in this study are classics like The Gruffalo, Stick Man, Room on the Broom, The Snail and the Whale, and Zog and the Flying Doctors.
"I'm thrilled to see how my students light up during our discussions, hands shooting up to share insights or personal connections," shares first-grade teacher Emily Mills. "They get such a kick out of making predictions and racing ahead to check if they're right!"
To wrap up the fun, the first-graders will write their own reviews of their top Julia Donaldson picks. They'll channel their creativity by designing story-themed shirts, then cap it off with Julia Donaldson Day by donning their custom creations and proudly sharing their reviews with the class.
