Academic Update: Pre-K 4 Math Tubbing

At Jacksonville Country Day School, Pre-K 4 math investigations are presented within an exploratory curriculum and students also learn new concepts through guided instruction. This month the students are using pattern blocks, unifix cubes, dice, links, and colored cubes.
During "math tubbing" time, the students rotate through five different math activities. The most exploratory phase is the beginning of the year. The children produce different outcomes from the same materials.

One group created beautiful designs that looked like rangoli, which is an art form from the Indian sub-continent. Another group made up a story about a family and their house, while two boys created a train. Another partnership sorted them by shape and others created a Star Wars creature's footprint. The final group figured out fractions, by placing two trapezoids to make a hexagon and six triangles also make the hexagon.

When we allow children to guide an activity and teachers take the role of facilitator, the outcome is a greater, enriched experience!
