Colorful Science in Pre-K 4

Learning to do things the old way
History? Check. Science? Check. Art? Triple check! Thanks to the P.A.S.S. (Portable, Affordable, Simple Science) program, our Pre-K 4 explorers turned kitchen staples into vibrant Native American–inspired dyes.

Teacher Justin Jeans kicked things off with a big question: How did Native Americans make colors from nature? The answer? Hunt, gather, and squish!

"When the children arrived in the morning, we mashed the beets, blackberries, and turmeric," said Ms. Jeans. "They watched as their hard work turned into dye for our Thanksgiving poem craft."

Beets created a bold magenta. Blackberries burst into deep purple. Turmeric swirled sunny yellow. Tiny hands plunged in, transforming water into liquid rainbows.

Next? The grand soak. Each child dunked a sheet of paper—already printed with a special Thanksgiving poem—into the swirling dyes. They watched the colors crawl and blend like magic!

From mash to masterpiece, these colorful creations blend hands-on exploration with creativity.
