Sharks Dive into Epic School Year

by Michael Porter
There is no time to waste at JCDS.
Wow, what a thrilling start to the school year at JCDS! Over 400 super-charged Sharks arrived on campus on Wednesday for an unforgettable first day of school that had everyone buzzing with excitement.

Returning students were eager to reunite with their friends and couldn’t wait to make new ones. A few of our younger Sharks were a tad shy stepping out of the car, but they quickly dove into the school spirit, settling in with their amazing teachers and new pals.

Students who are new to JCDS this year were just as excited, if a little nervous, about starting in a new school.

"It was fantastic! I loved everything!" said 1st-grader Ansh S., who is new to JCDS this year. "Ms. Gammon is super nice."

Ansh enjoyed talking about science in Ms. Deb Landon's science lab and is looking forward to learning about math, reading, and the rainforest.

Classrooms were buzzing as teachers jumped right in, sparking curiosity and setting the stage for a year packed with mastering new skills and epic learning adventures.

The teachers wasted no time, as there are many, many new skills each grade level will learn. Our faculty spent time going over routines and expectations, and also spent time on some getting-to-know-you activities. The students had a great preview of what is to come this year!

Even though it was the first day of school, yesterday was a regular school day, and students followed the established schedule—going to lunch, P.E., specialists, and recess.

"Our Sharks kicked off the new school year with their first library visit—and they were so excited to bring home their very own books!" said Literacy and Library Specialist Jen Currie. "To get everyone back into the reading groove, we started with a fun story or a poem, and then... we let them loose to explore and choose books that spoke to them."

Ms. Currie reminds parents that reading to their children is one of the most important activities you can do with your child every day.
