Character Education

Students at Jacksonville Country Day School care about others and making the world a better place.
That’s because character education has been a key focus of Jacksonville Country Day since 1997 and the program continues to evolve. Teaching positive behavior underpins all education efforts and is integrated throughout the entire school, including after school and extracurricular programs. School-wide assemblies, and classroom posters, skits, and songs, emphasize a different virtue each month.

We know that building character starts with faculty, staff, and administrators. The faculty and staff intentionally model the good behavior they expect from others. Our teachers reinforce values taught at home, expect students to behave kindly towards others, and encourage making good choices.

Ginny Warren, School Counselor

Our teachers use organic situations that arise as opportunities to teach about character. If unkind words or actions are being displayed, they refocus the behavior on the correct way to manage one's own behavior to make positive choices.
The character education committee is led by the teachers. The committee includes representatives from each grade and together they coordinate the service learning projects and set the virtues of the month, such as honesty and self-control. Each grade level is responsible for one of the assemblies each year and puts posters up in the halls promoting good character and service learning projects. This helps inform their school friends about postive behavior.

The buddy system at Jacksonville Country Day School, where each younger student is paired with an older buddy, also reinforces good behavior. This is also true of Leadership Corps, where 6th graders assist younger students as they get in and out of their cars at the traffic circles and walk their early learning friends to their classes.
