I See and I Write

by Michael Porter
Kindergarten students practiced their writing skills during their Deep Dive in October. Ms. Wendy Johnston, the Early Learning Team Lead, took the students on an outdoor adventure to write words about objects they observed in nature.
"When you give children a task it is more meaningful if they are involved in it," Ms. Johnston said.

Armed when pencils, paper, and clipboards, the young writers wrote words directly or drew pictures of what they saw and labelled them in their own handwriting.

Having the children make their own decisions about what they wrote helped give them ownership in their learning.

"They are more invested if they can be part of the learning," Ms. Johnston explained. "It gets installed in their memory."
