It is no secret that JCDS has one of the best elementary Spanish programs in Jacksonville, with students as young as three learning the language. Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in terms of native speakers, so being able to communicate thoughtfully and effectively in Spanish is a useful skill.
JCDS Spanish Specialist Iliana Leonard "provided a wonderful foundation and created a love of this beautiful language in our children. She gave our students the foundation they needed to succeed at JCDS and well beyond,” former JCDS, and current Bolles, parent Kim Anderson said.
The early emphasis on Spanish at JCDS is paying dividends to many alums who currently attend Bolles. JCDS alums were a part of the Bolles squad that recently took home the 5A state title at the 2018 Florida State Spanish Conference.
In the Impromptu Speech part of the competition, alums Arianna Khan (’12) and Alexander Tun ('13) received perfect scores for outstanding language and communication skills in Spanish. Seven other JCDS alums scored in the Sobresaliente (the highest category): Nithya Badarinath (’13), Charu Chaturvedi (’14), Claire Cywes (’13), Kamren Khan (’13), Shourya Sangam (’13), and Isabel Schwam (’12).
JCDS alums were also a key part of the play, Sempronio, that the Bolles team performed. The play featured alum Shourya Sangam as the lead character. There were also with notable performances by JCDS alums Nithia Badarinath (’13), Charu Chaturvedi, Arianna Khan, Kamren Khan, and Alexander Tun.
Two alums competed in the Declamations part of the contest, where the student dramatically recites a poem in Spanish for 2-3 minutes in front of a panel of judges. JCDS alums competing in this event included Claire Cywes and Isabel Schwam, who had a perfect score.
Additionally, on April 4, the following JCDS alums were inducted into the Spanish Honor Society at Bolles. Isabel Schwam is the current president of the Spanish Honor Society and conducted the installation ceremony.
Elise Anderson (’14)
Mishal Asad (’14)
Andrea Ashchi (’14)
Richa Goel (’14)
Raya Rukab (’13)
Avery Patterson (’14) Jack Valinho (’14)
Alums Haley Bowmaster ('14) and Michael Hume ('13) recently returned from an exchange trip to Madrid, Spain. They lived with local families and practiced their Spanish, as well as taking in the culture and sights.
Not only has the JCDS Spanish program prepared them for success in Spanish fluency, but also communicating thoughtfully and effectively and approaching challenges with confidence.
A huge thanks to Señoras Leonard and Tablada for preparing the students so well for academic success in Spanish!
