Early Learning Students Give the Gift of Reading

Early Learning students at Jacksonville Country Day School (JCDS) donated five big red tubs of books to Books-A-Go Go on December 9. The Pre-K 3 through Kindergarten students collected the new and gently used children’s book so that other children in Jacksonville may have books of their own.
Books-A-Go Go collects books from schools, companies, and community organizations that conduct drives including the PGA TOUR, Jacksonville Country Day School, and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Founder and president Betty Metz and her fellow volunteers work tirelessly collecting and distributing these books, primarily through the Duval County School District’s Teacher Supply Depot.

The latest book drive at JCDS is part of a long tradition. Books-A-Go Go began at JCDS with the donation of a few boxes of library books to West Jacksonville Elementary. When members of the JCDS community heard about the positive reaction to the donated books, they decided to do a book drive. Today, the organization continues to provide gently used books to underserved children, totaling more than 900,000. For some children, a book donated through Books-A-Go Go may be the first that they have ever owned.

JCDS conducts two book drives each year, one by the early learning students and the other as part of the school’s annual book fair. The continued support of JCDS has been critical to Books-A-Go Go’s success, according to Metz. "Over the years the support of JCDS has been unbelievable. They seem to donate more and more books each year," she said. "Book drives from JCDS are the best we have."
