JCDS Earns Literacy Award for Book Drives

Jacksonville Country Day School (JCDS) was one of two recipients of Books-A-Go Go’s Literacy Award. The award recognizes organizations that have made a significant contribution to Books-A-Go Go’s mission of providing low-income children with gently used to new books. “Books-A-Go Go would not exist if it weren't for JCDS,” Betty Metz, the organization’s president said.
Books-A-Go Go beginnings trace back to the donation of a few boxes of library books by JCDS to West Jacksonville Elementary. When members of the JCDS community heard about the positive reaction to the donated books, they decided to host a book drive and have students donate books they were no longer using. Today, the organization continues to provide gently used books to underserved children. Books-A-Go Go has donated more than 850,000 books since its inception. For some children, books donated through Books-A-Go Go may be the first ones that they have ever owned.

JCDS conducts two book drives each year, one by the early learning students and the other as part of the school’s annual book fair. The continued support of JCDS has been critical to Books-A-Go Go’s success, according to Metz. "Over the years the support of JCDS has been unbelievable. They seem to donate more and more books each year," she said. "Book drives from JCDS are the best we have."

Metz presented the Literacy Award plaque to the JCDS community at the school’s recent character education assembly. "This award is for the parents for helping ensure the children who need the books receive them,” head of school Pat Walker said when she accepted the award on behalf of JCDS.
