Greek for the Day

The 5th grade studied the history of Ancient Greece in their Global Studies class, and the Greek Olympics was the culminating activity for the unit.

 

"The Greek Olympics were a series of athletic competitions among representatives of city-states and one of the Panhellenic Games of Ancient Greece," said Global Studies teacher Dona Kenny. "They were held in honor of Zeus, and the Greeks gave them a mythological origin."

 

The students enjoyed games such as tug-of-war and relay races. Although not as strenuous as the original Greek Olympics, many of our students felt as if they had a thorough workout!

 

Dressing in convincing-looking Greek costumes was great fun and lent an air of authenticity — in spite of the sneakers on their feet.

 

After the games, the students watched some Medieval-themed skits performed by 6th graders, and then some Greek mythology-themed skits they created themselves.

 

To wrap up their celebrations, they tasted some Greek-inspired dishes including lamb, pita, olives, pepperoncini, hummus, and tzatziki sauce — all prepared by our dining room staff.

 

There is no better way to learn about a culture than to actually live parts of it, and we are happy our students got the opportunity.
