Hands Hard at Work Creating Art

by Michael Porter
5th-graders create scrumptious (looking) projects.
Our fifth-graders have been happily getting their hands dirty in Art class! They’ve been finishing their delightful hand-built “pancake pots”, charming little vessels complete with lids shaped, decorated, and painted to look just like a mouthwatering stack of pancakes.

Using the classic coil technique, our artistic Sharks rolled long, snake-like ropes of clay and stacked them layer by layer. A smooth, round slab formed the base and lid, and then the real creativity began. Students topped their pots with tiny sculpted strawberries, blueberries, pats of butter, and drizzles of syrup, along with whatever other delicious details sparked their culinary and artistic imaginations.

Ms. Flores also allowed everyone to work on the pottery wheel. A practicing ceramic artist herself, she guided each student as they designed and shaped their own small plate, bowl, or cup.

All of the pieces are now headed for their first firing in the kiln (to cone 06), followed by glazing for beautiful color and a smooth finish. After a second firing, the students will proudly bring their functional ceramic creations home, taking with them a deeper appreciation for the patience, skill, and magic of the pottery process.
