Strings, Questions, and Smiles

by Michael Porter
Jacksonville Symphony string quartet enchants students.
The Kelly Fine Arts Center Auditorium came alive this spring with the rich sound of strings as students in 2nd through 5th grades gathered for a special performance by a quartet from the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra.

The ensemble featured Ann Hertler and Patrice Evans on violin, Susan Pardue on viola, and Laurie Cassaday on cello. Their program was a delightful mix of musical worlds: elegant classical pieces by Mozart, the lively Arrival of the Queen of Sheba by Handel, the passionate tango Por Una Cabeza by Gardel, and a modern favorite called The Rebel, written by local composer and fellow JSO violist Piotr Szewczyk.

The students sat spellbound, leaning forward as the music swirled around them. When the final notes faded, they raised their hands with thoughtful, eager questions. The professional musicians were visibly impressed by the young audience’s musical knowledge. Many of these students are JCDS band members who benefit from regular lessons with Music Specialist Jessica Barker and Band Specialist Chrystal Staples.

An afternoon of beautiful music, genuine curiosity, and proud smiles was the kind of experience that reminds us why the arts belong in every child’s school day.
