Healthy Lunch Program

JCDS offers a voluntary lunch service that provides attractive, healthy, and nutritious meals and is managed by a professional food service company. Updated lunch menus are posted to our website, in addition to information regarding the purchase of meals and other food items. Students may also bring their lunches from home.

The school and our food service company work together to provide a healthy selection of entrees along with fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grain products. JCDS encourages healthy choices by educating our students. Parents are discouraged from bringing “fast” or “junk” food as these foods do not support our overall school mission of nurturing healthy lifestyles.

Parents who plan to join their children for lunch must sign in at the main office and obtain a security badge prior to going to the cafeteria. To prevent exclusion of any student, parents who join their children for lunch outside should not invite other students.

Lunch: A Chance to Connect

"Connections" is an important theme at JCDS. In everything we do, we are connecting with someone. This past summer, we made some changes to the dining experience for our children, keeping the connections theme in mind.

We replaced the traditional long cafeteria tables and benches with round tables and individual chairs. This seems to be very popular with the students.

"They're nice," said Jasper, a 4th-grader. "They're round so nobody can be at the top or the bottom, which is fair."

Teachers and staff are encouraged to eat with the students, strengthening the bonds between  them.  On Wednesdays, older students eat with their younger buddies. Parents have also discovered that the new ambiance is more inviting, and are frequently seen having lunch with their children.
