Singapore Math

What is Singapore Math?

Singapore Math, a spiraling, base ten program used internationally, focuses on mental math, computational strategies, and place value. The progression from the concrete—pictorial—abstract approach enables learners to develop number sense and a strong foundation in mathematics. The model drawing method helps students visualize word problems and solve them. The central goal of the Singapore Math program is to enable students to become proficient mathematicians who are confident and capable problem solvers.

Jacksonville Country Day School has adopted Singapore Math as its mathematics curriculum. The math tub activities used in preprimary lay a foundation for Singapore Math, which begins formally in first grade.

Singapore Math in the News

An article in Jacksonville's Florida Times-Union describes how both Bolles and Jacksonville Country Day School have implemented Singapore Math.

Recently, the New York Times ran an article about the adoption of Singapore Math in U.S. schools. Among their findings:

"Singapore math...seems to address one of the difficulties in teaching math: all children learn differently."

Parent Trainings

Parents were invited to learn about Singapore Math at a series of parent education events at the school's Jacksonville, FL, campus. Sarah Schaefer, Singapore Math consultant, introduced parents to computational strategies, mental math, and model drawing. Amy Kucsak and Ruthanne Stabler hosted grade level training sessions.

Many of the training sessions were recorded and posted online.
