Portrait of a Graduate: Clare Stern ('04)

“In my line of work, I listen to and speak frequently about shared values and how we can orient around what we have in common versus what divides us. Over the years I have thought a great deal about why collaborative leadership and service mean so much to me. My answer came to me in two parts. It’s my family’s values and the Character Education program at JCDS that has been the basis for why I have been involved with interfaith cooperation, AmeriCorps, and other initiatives.
The emphasis on collaborative leadership through the buddy program was the inspiration for how I designed the peer mentoring component for the Kansas City Interfaith Youth Alliance’s Faith Always Wins Youth Initiative.
The commitment to service is exhibited in so many ways at JCDS; from the administration unloading a student’s backpack from their car in the morning, to a parent helping out in the classroom, to students writing letters to members of the armed forces, and bringing canned food for folks who are less fortunate and/or experiencing homelessness. It is these acts of kindness, service, and collaboration that create ripples of tangible hope for what community is and can be.”
Clare Stern is a 2016 graduate of the University of North Florida where she received her Bachelor of Health Science with a concentration in Community Health and a double minor in Health Education and Community Leadership. Clare has served on the Better Together at UNF Executive Board, a member of the Interfaith Youth Core’s National Leadership Team and 2015-2016 Better Together Coach class, and traveled to Israel to learn more about interfaith activism and youth development through the Jewish National Fund’s Caravan for Democracy. She has also served as an AmeriCorps Volunteer. Outside of work, Clare can be found training for her next marathon, training her rescue puppy, or sipping coffee.
