Little Hands, Big Hearts

Pop-tabs collection brings hope to Ronald McDonald House.
The Early Learning students have spent the entire year carefully collecting pop-tabs from soda cans, filling donation jars in their classrooms and all around campus with quiet determination and big hearts.

On May 14, they were warmly visited by Harriet Tambini from Ronald McDonald House, who accepted the pop-tabs, food, and supplies with a grateful smile. The children beamed as she thanked them for their thoughtful gifts — little acts of kindness that will bring real comfort to families staying at the House while their children receive medical care.

The pop-tabs will be sold as scrap metal to help “keep the lights on,” as Ms. Tambini gently explained to the students. Ronald McDonald House provides a home away from home, offering comfort, care, and loving support to families with seriously ill children from around the world.

"Service learning develops empathy which is so important to us at JCDS," said Early Learning Team Lead Wendy Johnston. "When the children see their efforts help a greater cause they are more than likely to repeat that effort. A simple act of kindness can go a long way."

Together with the book drive for Books-a-Go Go earlier this year, the pop-tab collection has been a beautiful, hands-on introduction to service learning for our youngest Sharks — planting the first seeds of compassion and generosity that will grow with them for years to come.
